Osteopathic Manipulative Treatments
At Garden State Sports Medicine, Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a cornerstone of our care. Our experienced osteopathic physician uses evidence-based, hands-on techniques to address the root cause of your symptoms—promoting lasting relief and optimal function.
OMT offers a gentle, holistic approach to reduce pain, restore mobility, and enhance overall wellness. Whether you're recovering from an injury or managing chronic discomfort, OMT can be a powerful tool in your path to better health.
What Are Osteopathic Manipulative Treatments?
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a hands-on, non-invasive technique used to diagnose, treat, and prevent a variety of conditions. By restoring proper alignment and function, OMT supports the body’s natural healing process. It draws on methods similar to those used in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and chiropractic care, and is often combined with other treatments to enhance recovery and optimize performance.
OMT can be especially helpful for:
Muscle and joint pain
Sports injuries
Headaches and tension
Back and neck pain
Improving mobility and recovery
Who Performs OMT?
OMT is completed by an osteopathic physician, also known as a DO. A DO is a fully licensed physician who is trained to diagnose and treat illness, prescribe medication, and even perform surgery. DOs complete the same rigorous medical education as MDs—PLUS an additional 200 hours of specialized training in osteopathic principles and the musculoskeletal system. What truly sets DOs apart is their emphasis on treating the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—and their deep understanding of how the body’s structure and function are interrelated.
Garden State Sports Medicine brings this comprehensive approach to care for athletes, performers, and active individuals at every level. He blends advanced sports medicine techniques with the osteopathic philosophy of supporting the body’s natural ability to heal.
Core Techniques of Our Osteopathic Manipulative Treatments
OMT includes a wide range of techniques, each carefully selected based on your specific injury, physical exam findings, and personal preferences. Treatments can range from gentle, subtle movements—such as those used in myofascial release—to more direct approaches like high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) techniques, commonly known as “cracking.”
Between these two ends of the spectrum lies a diverse set of methods designed to help realign the body, restore balance, and improve overall function.
Common techniques we use include:
Myofascial Release
Muscle Energy Counterstrain
Cranial - Sacral Treatments
Lymphatic Drainage Techniques
Fascial Manipulation
Facilitate Positional Release
